Sally Zervakos-Nicewander is a lifelong singer and pianist. Her career began as a church pianist at age 12. She presented her first piano recital as a high school senior in Savannah, Georgia. Sally attended Shorter College, Rome, Georgia on scholarship in both voice and piano. While attending there, she was a member of the esteemed Shorter Chorale, touring and performing in Europe on two occasions.
Sally earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with honors. After graduation, she was trained as a certified Yamaha Music Educator in Irvine, California and worked for several years at the YMES School in Woodstock, Georgia. Sally and her late husband spent many years teaching grades K-12 in general music, chorus, band and orchestra in the Fulton County School System, Fulton County, Georgia. Most recently, Sally was music director and accompanist for musicals at Forsyth Academy of the Performing Arts.
Through the years, Sally has continued her commitment to private instruction in voice and piano, equipping all her students with a strong foundation in classical repertoire. Her teaching technique is rooted in solfege, ear-training, theory proficiency and self-expression. Sally passionately believes in music as a universal language and bridge to communication for all people. She has three daughters, Elizabeth, Rachel and Danielle. Sally and her husband live in Molena, Georgia. In her spare time, Sally serves as soloist and pianist for her church, acts in local theater productions, and cares for her English Bulldog, Buttercup and her Akita, Takara.
Ms. Sally believes in vocal exploration as a means of self-discovery. In voice lessons, the student will learn vocal production through the anatomy of the voice - how humans make sound. Vocal control and maintenance is vital to the well-being of the singer. Therefore, Ms. Sally is dedicated to classical training at all levels. Students will develop proper warm-up skills and effective performance posture through confidence-building strategies each wee. Younger singers begin studying age-appropriate materials including folk music and show tunes. As the singer progresses, classical repertoire is introduced. Performances are the culmination of mastery in styles studied throughout the semester. Let's work together to find the singer in you!
Students are given the opportunity to perform solos at The Music Garden recitals, held in December and May.
